Ιnquiry-oriented science instruction has been characterised in a variety of ways. It could be named a broad framework with different meanings. We focus here on situations where students predict, observe and explain. According to White and Gunstone (1992), predicting engages students to decide what knowledge is appropriate to apply in a certain situation. The context in the whole project is materials, which is one of the main entities in science. Understanding properties, uses, and structures of materials enables constructing the basis for scientific literacy as well as for further studies. However, it is known that students have difficulties in learning the key concepts of matter (e.g., Margel, Eylon, & Scherz, 2008). In the poster, we will describe the Finnish module, Materials around us devoting special attention to the process of how the module has been developed.
