Kuhn's approach to conceptual change is developed in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions and a series of articles in the 1980's. We examine whether this pattern can be applied to the history of mathematics, and put forward Lakatos's contribution to this problem. We then compare Kuhn's approach to that of Piaget, and ask to what extent the two are compatible. We defend the view that under certain conditions, the two can be combined.
