The aim of this article is to present the possibilities and benefits which are offered by the progressive pedagogical approaches of voluntary educational projects. Such an environmental project was realized by the 6th Primary School of Edessa. The aim of the project was to inform students and teachers about the culture of their area through alternative tourism activities, which are not widely known. These activities also tried to ‘break' the daily school routine, to develop interpersonal relationships and co-operative attitudes among the members of the local educational community, to sensitize those involved in environmental matters and finally, to link the school with the local society. The participants learned different aspects of the local culture and tradition. They were involved in the process, enriched their knowledge, experienced new things; they communicated and co-operated in a new and different ways. They searched, discovered, ‘felt' the importance of an amazing well-organized attempt.
